Nottingham has been my most local city for my whole life but I don’t get to visit as often as I would like which means there is always new restaurant bars and shops popping all over the place which I haven’t necessarily gotten round to trying. When It’s In Nottingham got in touch and asked if I wanted to get involved in their secret dinner club event I jumped at the chance.
We were told nothing about the event other than asked for any dietary requirements and asked to meet at the left Lion in the town square for 6.30. If this wasn’t one of the most exciting events I’d been to then I wasn’t sure what was. We were welcomed by the lovely ladies from It’s In Nottingham who had organised the whole thing.
We all followed them to the first location – non other than the Boilermaker. I can remember going here when it very first opened and absolutely loving the amazing cocktail menu they offered. It is definitely a good cocktail place to visit in the city, but be prepared to have to wait at the weekends. The drinks are definitely worth the wait though – always very innovative!
Firstly we were given some nibbles (yes please to the Pom Bears!) and a cocktail designed especially for us called the Left Lion which celebrated all things Nottingham. It was made with coffee from Outpost Coffee, Syrup from Doughnotts and London Dry Gin. It also came with a origami Lion (I originally thought they were all different animals and the blue one 100% looked like a sealion!) but it was really love to sit and chat with new bloggers and just generally enjoy the ambience of the boilermaker. If I’m being honest I didn’t really like the cocktail as the coffee and sweetness combined with the gin was a bit too much for me but the other girls loved it.
We were getting a bit hank marvin’ by the time we had finished our drinks and we headed across the road to The Curious Tavern. The tavern is part of a group of pubs and restaurants including the Curious Manor and Lost property, both also in Nottingham. We walked in and were all ooh-ing and aah-ing at the inside. It was almost entirely lit by candlelight and was absolutely delightful inside. They even have a partial glass floor in the bar where you can see into the caves below. We were all given a delicious cocktail (forgive me for not remembering what it was!) and a plate of pie and mash. Is any meal more autumnal? I’m not a huge lover of pastry but the filling inside was delicious – as was the mash! I’ll definitely be taking Chris back there. He bloody loves pie!
After our dinner at the Tavern there was only one thing for it.. up to Pelham Street and into the Homemade Cafe. I’d never been inside but we were all instantly drawn to the delights sitting in the window. There is nothing I love more than settling down for a natter over coffee and cake so Homemade will most certainly be my next coffee stop location.
The window display had our mouths watering and we were welcomed with a plate full of goodies each. After Eight Brownies, Vegan Lemon and Raspberry Cake as well as Oreo Vanilla Cheesecake all made fresh in the café. Whilst the brownie was waaay too rich for me, I absolutely woofed the other two options down. The vegan cake we were given was nothing like I had expected, very moist (sorry, worst word ever!!), packed full of flavour and not at all dry. I’ve tried to make gluten free cakes before and they were a bloody disaster so I had pretty much written off gluten / vegan cakes as a bad idea. I couldn’t get over how fab it was. Cheesecake is a new favourite of mine and the oreo offering was absolutely stunning!!
We were also kindly gifted a goodie bag including some skincare treats, perfume samples and some vouchers for a free pizza at MOD. I left feeling very full and very spoilt.
It’s In Nottingham has created a database of all the fab places that Nottingham has to offer so if you wanted to do something like this for yourself you could do. You can find their amazing food and drink finder by clicking here!
Thank you to the lovely ladies at It’s In Nottingham for making this happen, and for the staff at Boilermaker, Curious Tavern and Homemade for their hospitality. What a wonderful evening!
